Wow, we’ve been having a few overcast days lately – high clouds partially obscuring the direct sun which nevertheless does not cease to warm us up more than comfortably, toast our skin while on the beach (caution: you can burn just as easily under these skies!) and make us sweat walking around town. This is just a quick post with a few items about what we’ve been up to around here lately… and what’s in store in the next few days…
Jan. 24: A Birthday at Las Gatas
Winter season is our social time here in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo and we’ve all been enjoying friends and family in town over the past few weeks. Last weekend we celebrated Owen Lee’s birthday at his precious Las Gatas Beach Club hideaway out on Las Gatas Beach.

Owen has been a resident of Zihuatanejo and Las Gatas in particular ever since he fell in love with the place back in the late 1960′s. He recently wrote a wonderful book about his experiences with Captain Jacques Yves Cousteau on the Calypso and his subsequent introduction and love affair with Zihuatanejo, called “Prisoner in Paradise”. His birthday on Saturday was a fun afternoon, with a “Music Therapy” skit performed by Owen and friends, accompanied by lots of good food, drink and music.
Jan. 25: Troncones, Cafe Sol and Hacienda Eden
Sunday was a perfect day for a drive out to Troncones to see friends who were in from overseas and who’d we’d not seen in quite some time – what’s more, the perfect excuse to take advantage of Cafe Sol’s Sunday barbecue (chicken, ribs and fish accompanied by a variety of veggies and salads, topped off by peach cobbler….) at Hacienda Eden… a mellow day after the revelry of the previous one.

Wine tasting event (Guitarfest Fundraiser) at Capricho’s Restaurant in Zihuatanejo. 5 tastes of fine Northern California wines for $200 pesos, with proceeds going to support the 2009 edition of the Zihuatanejo International Guitar Festival. 7-10 pm. More details
Saturday, Jan. 31st:
Life celebration / memorial gathering for friends of Jackie Krowartz and Thom Peck, upstairs at Rossy’s on La Ropa, from noon to sunset. More info…
