There are often special events and cultural things going on in Zihuatanejo town square and basketball court, situated on Playa Municipal at the base of Cuauhtemoc Street in Zihua Centro. This past Friday, we attended the “Taste of Zihuatanejo”, hosted by a local restaurant association with the participation of several Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa restaurants…
Tickets for this event cost $80 pesos, and that entitled the ticket holder to a small beer or soda and a sampling of foods prepared by a number of local restaurants from around the Zihua downtown area, Ixtapa, La Ropa and Ixtapa Island. Tables and chairs were positioned on the square and restauranteurs set up their food buffet-style. There was a great variety of delicious, regional food, centered principally and not surprisingly around seafood: delicious fish and scallop ceviche, a tremendous paella, deep-fried shrimp balls, spicy fish tostadas, oriental chicken and rice were amongst the fixings offered.
Afterwards, the local Casa de la Cultura (House of Culture) hosted a number of music and dance presentations. We were treated to several songs by the Mariachi Real de Apatzingan, regional dances performed by the youth dance group from the Casa de la Cultura (dances from Chihuahua as well as Conchero dances from Guanajuato), a great little trio again from Apatzingan, Michoacan, followed by even more dances by the energetic House of Culture group.
