Our friend Owen Lee is back in town for the season and has just announced the reopening of the Nature Study Center at his Las Gatas Beach installation in Zihuatanejo, Mexico. The official reopening ceremony will be happening this Saturday, November 28 (amendment: date moved to Dec. 5, 2009) starting at 3 p.m. at the former Las Gatas Beach Club, at the seaward end of Las Gatas Beach.
The aim of Owen Lee’s revived Nature Study Center is to educate visiting students and tourists on how to live in harmony with the tropical gifts of nature with which we are surrounded in here Zihuatanejo and that inspired Vogue Magazine of Mexico to name our port and bay, “one of the ten most beautiful natural harbors in the world.”
The Nature Study center features an open-air, sea-side Ecology Exhibition and a shaded TV theater. The Center will conduct, at no charge, weekly bi-lingual lectures or seminars on how to discover ones personal role in the global ecosystem, as proposed by the late Captain Jacques Yves Cousteau.
Owen Lee holds the distinction of being the first American to join the film team of Captain Jacques Yves Cousteau, working as an underwater cameraman aboard the R/V Calypso until a knee injury forced his retirement, and then lecturing for Captain Cousteau in over 300 cities.
