December 23 (Wednesday): Zihuatanejo celebrates the 56th anniversary of it´s founding. There will be fun and revelry in the town square (basketball court area) on Playa Municipal in the evening.

December 31 (Thursday): On the last day of the year, Zihua symbolically finalizes the annual sea turtle preservation program with a sea turtle release ceremony on all of the major beaches of Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa with the participation of local hotels and restaurants. The release takes place around sunset on Playas La Ropa, La Madera and Principal in Zihuatanejo and on Playa el Palmar in Ixtapa.
On New Year´s Eve (Visperas de Año Nuevo), the municipality puts on a program of musical and cultural events in the town square. There will be food and frolic and it´s a good vantage point to watch the fireworks over the bay. Many of the local restaurants will, of course, be hosting their own New Year´s Eve dinner programs and festivities, so check out your options as you wander around town in the days prior to the end of the year.
