This past weekend we spent a wonderful couple of hours visiting the Refugio de Potosi ecological park for the protection of local species of plants and animals. The refuge was putting on an open house fundraiser and invited the public at large to visit for free and learn about its activities and aims. The activities included a showing of ecologically-themed art done by local artists, face painting and paper-maché crafts for the kids, a book reading by author Kathe Kokolias of her recently published book, “Spandex and Black Leather,” raffles, and the opportunity to partake in some great food.

Within the confines of the Refugio are harbored a number of rescued and protected animals amongst which currently are found a tejón (badger), a boa constrictor, a variety of lizards and other reptiles and amphibians, a few scorpions, tarantulas and several birds. The refuge features a large and naturally landscaped Iguanarium, a nature walk with many local species of plants identified, the exhibit of the bones of a sperm whale that was found beached in the area, and a butterfly pen teeming with these silent and elegant floating wonders of nature.

The aims of the Refugio de Potosi encompass providing a habitat for the protection of local animals and plants; promoting conservation and ecological awareness; promoting ecological tourism in the area; creating opportunities for community involvement and education, conducting research, and rescuing, treating and releasing back into the wild animals and species needing sanctuary.

The Refugio is set up as a non-profit organization. It was started with private funds and relies on the support and patronage of the local community to keep it running.  Among the things you can do to help support the refuge are

  • Visit the refuge and bring your friends – spread the word
  • Purchase a membership ($500 pesos per year) that will give you discounts on entrances and for special events and activities, and unique volunteer activities
  • Adopt a species
  • Donate supplies for workshops or run a workshop yourself
  • Volunteer your time and expertise
  • Make a donation of any size – all are appreciated

The Refugio de Potosi is located on the road that runs from Los Achotes off Highway 200 to Barra de Potosi, near one of the lagoons. Look for the tall observation tower.
