pepper 450x337 Organic Produce to your DoorIf you’re looking for luscious, fresh, local, organic produce to enhance your summertime diet here in Zihuatanejo, RIGHT NOW is the time to sign up for Playa Viva’s program of “Canasta Viva” (Live Basket).  Within a week or two organic produce delivery will start for an eight-week harvest season, and you can get your basket delivered to your door either once or twice a week.  Produce will vary somewhat over the course of the delivery, depending on what’s  ripe every week, but the Canasta promises to include things such tomatoes, melons, radishes, chile peppers, onions, carrots, cilantro, beans, basil, watermelon, cucumber and occasional harvest surprises.

    For the record, I signed up for a “media-canasta” (half-canasta) per week (which is the most apt for only two people) and received the following selection of organic goodies in the first week’s basket:
    red Roma tomatoes, green tomatillos, grapefruits, luscious limes, both green and purple basil, a bundle of fresh lemon grass, nopales (cactus), and a bagful of globe zucchinis plus two other kinds of squash…

    This morning I made myself fresh celery and organic lime juice sweetened with agave nectar…mmmmmm
