International Day of the World’s Indigenous People

There will be a a large crafts and culinary fair featuring handcrafts and typical dishes from different indigenous groups of the state of  Guerrero at the local celebrations of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People this coming August 6, 7, 8 and 9 in downtown Zihuatanejo.   It has also been announced that Michoacan will be represented with an exposition of natural medicines and herbs used by the indigenous peoples of the Purépecha region.

The fair is to be held in the town plaza and basketball court area at the base of Cuauhtemoc street, and it is free and totally open to the public.

International Day of the World’s Indigenous People, resolved by UN resolution in 1994 to be celebrated on August 9th every year during the International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People, was in 2004 extended into a Second International Decade with an aim tostrengthen international cooperation for the solution of problems faced by indigenous people in such areas as culture, education, health, human rights, the environment, and social and economic development”.

UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues

The UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues came into effect, endorsed by the Economic and Social Council in July 2000, for the discussion of  “indigenous issues related to culture, economic and social development, education, the environment, health and human rights”.
