The Zihuatanejo municipal government has just announced plans for extended Independence Day celebrations to commemorate the bicentenary of Mexican Independence. The festivities is supposed to kick off on the 1st of September and end with the Grito de la Independencia (Cry of Independence) that takes place on the eve of Mexico’s Independence and with the military parade on Independence Day itself, September 16th.

As part of the celebrations, the city will be setting up a photographic exhibition depicting aspects of both the old and the new Zihuatanejo. Other activities will be organized and announced as they unfold, all of them focused on regional and national history and the lives of Mexico’s heroes.

Though no other details have been announced yet, I suspect that a lot of the activities will be taking place in the area of the plaza and basketball court in downtown Zihuatanejo, at the base of Cuauhtemoc street, as well as at the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall).
