Barra de Potosi, Coacoyul, Playa Larga, Playa Blanca, Puerto Vicente Guerrero

There are several growing beaches and communities to the south of Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, off the highway leading to Petatlan, Papanoa, Acapulco and beyond, include Coacoyul, Playa Larga, Playa Blanca, Barra de Potosi and Puerto Vicente Guerrero. These are generally small communities, some of them presenting excellent sportfishing opportunities, affording pleasantly laid-back rentals and resources out of the main stream of Ixtapa ZIhuatanejo life. These area are becoming increasingly popular for those wanting to escape the crowds and bustle of the town and bay beaches.

The long stretch of beach near the Zihuatanejo International airport, which on a map appears as one continuous beach, is actually divided into, from north to south, Playa Larga, Playa Blanca and Barra de Potosi.

The open Pacific crashes along most of this stretch, and caution should be exercised here - most of the beach is not suitable for swimming and is quite dangerous. There is much more protection for swimming at the southern, Barra de Potosi end, where there is also a large lagoon where visitors can enjoy boat or kayak trips into the mangroves for birdwatching.

Most enjoyable on these beaches are the opportunities for long and almost solitary beach walks, horseback riding along the sands, savoring spectacular sunsets over the Pacific waters, watching dolphins cavort wildly in the waves.and, at certain times during the winter season, seeing whales passing by offshore as they breach and spout..
