Las Gatas Walk

There are basically two ways to reach Las Gatas Beach in Zihuatanejo Bay: by boat taxi from the municipal pier, or by walking. Although there are some roads being cut in to developments overlooking Las Gatas from above and behind, none of these provide direct vehicular access to this splendid, white-sanded crescent of beach, where an  ancient man-made, coral-encrusted reef makes for some delightful snorkeling and safe swimming.

Last Sunday we made the walk over from La Ropa beach to spend a relaxing and pleasant afternoon at Las Gatas. The path follows the shoreline at water level and is a continuation of a narrow, dead-end road that leads to a small promontory at the old Capricho del Rey. Since last doing this walk a couple of months ago, the path has been widened and flattened to a great extent, and the couple of spots where one has to scale over a few large boulders have also been worked on, making the whole trek over to Las Gatas a lot easier and quicker. Nevertheless, a good pair of shoes is still advisable, as the path is still not particularly suitable for anyone who has physical problems or imbalances that cause walking difficulties.

The water was crystal clear and of a beautiful, turquoise-tinged green, and the views across the bay spectacular. There were a number of families enjoying the water all along the shoreline  – also a great stretch for snorkeling enjoyment.  The pier to which the water taxis and local pangas arrive at Las Gatas is currently undergoing what looks like the final stages of amplification and reconstruction – the structure is much larger than before and capable of accommodating a number of boats, and includes a floating portion that will aid in embarking and disembarking passengers during changing tides and rougher seas.

All along the beach are seafood restaurants, diving and snorkeling equipment providers and opportunities for relaxing and therapeutic massage. It’s a perfect place for an afternoon of sun-drenched water play, reading comfortably under a beachfront sun shade or indulging in a shrimp cocktail, tasty fish tacos or lobster followed by a quiet siesta on the sand.
