Zihua Carnival 2010

For the past few years Zihuatanejo has been heavily promoting its carnival celebrations that were started up after having been dropped for a time during the late 90s and early 2000s. Right now around town you can see colorful reminders of the upcoming event, with large replicas of masks and banners hanging from lampposts, trees and statuary.

Although Zihuatanejo´s carnival (carnaval in Spanish) dates don´t end on Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday — Zihuatanejo is celebrating from February 9th through 14th instead of from the more traditional 11th through the 16th — there will be much of the same revelry as is found elsewhere during carnival celebrations: street dancing and colorful processions during the week, lots  music and other activities, both at the town square and in other quarters, the crowning of the carnival queen, and the culmination of the festivities on Sunday afternoon with the color and pageantry of the floats in the carnival parade.

Wander around town this week in the late afternoons or evenings and you´ll be sure to catch parts and pieces of the festivities… join in!

Elected as Carnival Queen for 2010 is Yuleni Vargas Salas; the Carnival Princess is Amairani Guatemala Alvar and the Carnival King (Rey Feo) is Juan Francisco Galeana Maganda.
