Ixtapa Zihuatanejo is an increasingly popular tourist and vacation home destination on the Pacific coast of Mexico. This section of coastline, running north to Ixtapa Zihuatanejo from Acapulco, is called La Costa Grande – the Long or Great Coast. The original town of Zihuatanejo is nestled at the base of one of the most beautiful enclosed bays in the country and indeed in the world. The more modern resort of Ixtapa is located only minutes’ drive north on a sweeping curve of gorgeous beach lined with palms and 5-star hotels, an excellent array of restaurants and shops, and with access to two signature golf courses and plenty of outdoor activities.
A little background
I’m a resident of this fantastic spot, having lived here almost exclusively since about 1995, although I visited it often prior to that. The first time I set foot in Zihua was in 1969, when it was truly a tiny fishing village on a magical bay and to get to Playa La Ropa meant a hot and dusty trek over a narrow dirt track. Back then, Ixtapa was nothing but a stretch of low-lying land and palm trees, Troncones was accessed only by 4WD vehicle or ox-cart over a jungle track with machete in hand, and Zihuatanejo itself was a small tangle of unpaved streets in which there were more pigs, chickens and donkeys to be found than motorized vehicles.
Prior to settling down here, between 1970 and the early 1990s, I spent most of my time in Cuernavaca, Morelos, interspersed with some 6 years in Mexico City in the 80s. Very occasionally during my entire Mexico sojourn, I have spent short periods of time in my native Canada, in Spain and in Chile, and traveled fairly extensively throughout Mexico itself. I was fortunate to work for close to 20 years in the film industry, both in Mexico and in Spain, and that afforded me opportunities to get to know a lot of places I might not otherwise have had the chance to visit.
So I guess what goes into these pages is a distillation of that history and the love for this country that has grown out of it. I hope it gives you some insight into what it’s like to live here in this bit of paradise all year ’round, and what it means to make Mexico home.
