On Tuesday 20th we had a double-whammy day, starting with hope-inspiring swearing in of U.S. President Barack Obama at midday – one must admit an historical event of great proportion wherever one was in the world, and of whatever heritage or persuasion – followed later in the afternoon by the appearance in Zihua Bay of [...] Ah, the holiday crowds have come and now almost gone… there were bus and carloads of people (but not a tremendously unruly amount), there were crowds of happy sun and sea bathers on the beaches (but not unbearable hoards) and for us there was a nice, calm holiday break that almost left us feeling relaxed [...] The Virgin of Guadalupe Even though we’re in our standard just-before-Christmas lull and in general tourism is on the low side, there has been movement and many fun happenings in town lately, and over the next while there is a lot more planned, so here’s a quick run-down of the parts that I know of [...] Just a quick update on what’s been going on in town… first, it’s slow. The economy is depressed everywhere, and here is no exception. Not too many people around right now although we’re expecting that next weekend, with the Revolution Day long weekend, town and beaches will become somewhat more of writhing mass of humanity [...] Zihuatanejo has a long history as a quiet fishing village before it became the beach vacation spot that it is today. The area is rich in sailfish, tuna, dorado (mahi-mahi) and a lot of other sport-fishing species as well as food fish. It has been classed as one of the best sport fishing regions in [...] Local newspapers have reported that there was an almost record count of turtles nesting in the area this past weekend. An article in the Despertar de la Costa reported that more than 120 sea turtles of the Lepidochelys olivacea species (Olive Ridley, in Mexico known as the Golfina) arrived on Saturday night to our area, [...] |
