Las Gatas, circa 1970
An old postcard
Visit Las Gatas as it looks today... |
Las Gatas was named for the "cat" sharks - harmless and whiskered - that used to frequent the bay. It was inhabited by Calzontzín, one of the last kings of the Tarascan Indians from Michoacan, who built the stone reef that still now protects the beach.
The reef provides wonderful conditions for snorkeling and peaceful swimming.
Back when this photo was taken, Las Gatas did have some vendors along it,, but basically it was a pristine stretch of beach on which mangroves and vegetation reached almost to the shore, and one sat under a canopy of leaves instead of canvas. |
